2017 BMW 5 Series

The 2017 BMW 5 Series isn't just a handsome driving machine, it's also a cleverly disguised luxury sports sedan with tons of performance under the hood. BMW cribbed much of its underpinnings from the sporty 3 Series while adding in luxury and tech touches from its bigger brother the 7 Series luxury cruiser. This combination of sport and luxury in the 2017 5 Series creates one of the best must-drive sedans currently on the market for anyone in the market for a new luxury sedan.

Beauty and Brawn

BMW set to work under the hood for the new 5 Series, opting for a pair of turbocharged engines this time around. A 2.0-liter twin-turbocharged four-cylinder is installed in the 530i, and will get 248-hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The larger 540i gets the impressive 3.0-liter twin-turbo I6 that delivers 335-hp and 332 lb-ft of torque.

Both powertrains get an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard rear-wheel drive. And BMW purists will be happy to note the option to upgrade to BMW's superb AWD system, xDrive, is available in either configuration.

These expansive and agile engines really take the 2017 5Series from 'just another luxury sedan,' to a car that's flat out fun to get behind the wheel of.

Helping the powerplants accomplish this is the lighten load of the overall car. BMW used weight-saving materials, such as an aluminum trunklid, roof, and doors which brought the car's weight down to about 137 pounds.

In the looks department, BMW needed to match the style with the performance. As such, the new 2017 5 Series is much more athletic than previous editions. Its headlights are now adaptive LEDs and stretch to touch the BMW twin-kidney grille, and behind these are aerodynamics-enhancing automatic shutters. Larger taillights contain LED elements and wrap farther around onto the fenders, and BMW's M Sport package include a revised snout with larger air intakes, restyled rocker panels, and trapezoidal exhaust outlets that poke out from a lower rear fascia styled to suggest a diffuser. Inside, that same package includes aluminum pedals, an M Sport steering wheel, and optional black leather with blue contrast stitching.

Inside, BMW didn't skimp on the luxury. They installed the latest-gen technology features, such as gesture control, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and a digital instrument cluster. And this time around, they decided to combine analog and digital functions in the instrument panel, creating a unique visual effect.

And the new HUD is 75% larger, with a full color display, and features turn-by-turn navigation, speed limits noted in the bottom corner, and current speed and gear display.
