2017 BMW X5

The 2017 BMW X5 was one of the original luxury SUVs to hit the market, and, just like the outstanding 3 Series, has become something of a benchmark for other luxury crossovers from its competitors. It's a high bar to be sure, which is why the BMW engineers put a lot of time and effort into vehicles like the 2017 X5 every year to make sure they keep that leading position.

And not only is the BMW X5 considered one of the sportiest in the luxury SUV segment, with its off-road capabilities equal to its on-road ones, but BMW made sure not to neglect the "luxury" aspect of its perennial luxury crossover by keeping the interior style relevant, fresh, and comforting.

What's New for 2017

A quick hits of what is updated for 2017 in the BMW X5 range from the iDrive infotainment system gets upgraded to version 5.0, to the Luxury package (formerly called the Luxury Line) is now a no-cost alternative to the xLine, to a wireless charging and Wi-Fi hotspot being added to the Premium package on some models.

The 2017 BMW X5 seats up to seven, and has an optional third row - which is quite small for full-size humans, but just right for smaller ones. Cargo space is measured at 23 cubic feet with the seats up and 66 with them down.

In the looks department, not too much has changed. However, the 2017 X5 does seem to be an amalgam of other vehicles in BMW's stable - there are echoes of the X3 in the its profile, and the front end inherits some of the looks of a BMW sedan.

Mechanically, the 2017 BMW X5 gets a few engine options for this time around. A 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 sits in the base model, which gets 300-hp and 300 lb-ft of torque and is offered in either rear- or all-wheel-drive configuration.

The popular plug-in hybrid edition, the xDrive40e marries a 2.0-liter turbo-4 to batteries for a net output of 308 hp. This competent green SUV has an EPA estimated combined rating of 58 mpge.

Sitting at the top of the heap is a 4.4-liter turbocharged V-8 that packs a truly remarkable 445-hp. It might not be the go-to powerplant for most buyers, it is an enormous engine in a relatively small vehicle, but for those off-road enthusiasts for whom performance isn't a want but a need, it's definitely worth taking for a spin.

BMW also didn't skimp on the standard features for the 2017 X5 either. Some of these include: automatic stop/start, a dynamics-control button, panoramic two-piece glass roof with sliding feature, iDrive infotainment system with on-board computer, touchpad controller, hard drive-based voice-activated navigation system with real-time traffic, 3D maps, a 10.2-inch high-res screen, 20GB storage for digital audio files, Web connectivity, BMW ConnectedDrive, USB and Bluetooth connectivity, and a power rear hatch.

Overall, the new 2017 BMW X5 continues to build on the superb legacy of previous generations. It's set to retain its title as a market and industry leader in ways that even the nearest competitors won't be able to match.
