BMW Dashboard Lights: Red Lights
A red dashboard light doesn’t always indicate an extensive problem, but it does alert you to things that should be checked immediately. Take a look at some of the red lights you could see on your dashboard:
Safety belt reminder
This light appears as a person with a safety belt across them. It will display when the driver or a passenger does not have their safety belt fastened.
Braking system
This light is the word “BRAKE”. It indicates a serious problem within the braking system. When you see this, you should schedule service immediately.
Parking brake
This light will appear with the word “PARK” above a capital P set inside a circle, which is inside a set of parentheses. It indicates that your parking brake is activated.
BMW Dashboard Lights: Yellow Lights
Yellow symbols on your dashboard don’t mean that service is urgent but do require your attention. Learn what to do when you see these symbols:
Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
When this light appears, you’ll see the letters “ABS” inside a circle, which itself is found within a set of parentheses. This light means that your Brake Assistant feature may not be functioning. Avoid abrupt braking and schedule service as soon as possible.
Check engine
This light is an outline of an engine block. It indicates that there may be an issue with the engine, emissions, or other components. You should have your engine serviced as soon as possible.
Steering system
This will appear as a steering wheel with an exclamation point to the right. It indicates that there may be something not working properly with your steering system or that power steering is unavailable. Have steering system checked if light does not go out on its own.
Tire pressure monitor
This light displays an exclamation point inside a set of parentheses. It illuminates when you have a tire that is under-inflated or flat. This light will display in yellow when pressure is off by at least 10% in a tire and will display red if the tire has deflated rapidly.
BMW Dashboard Lights: Green Lights
Green warning lights are a way to signal that certain features are being used. Look for these dashboard signals as you drive:
High-beam Assistant
This light looks like capital D with a capital A inside of it and five horizontal lines to the left. It appears when your High-beam Assistant is turned on.
Lane Departure Warning
This light displays to indicate that you have Lane Departure Warning engaged. It shows a vehicle positioned diagonally on a roadway.
Front fog lights
This light appears as a capital D with three diagonal lines to the left, which has a squiggly line running through them. It signals that your front fog lights are on.
Parking lights
This light shows capital Ds mirroring each other with three lines emitting from each. It will display when your parking lights are on.
