If you have ever asked yourself: “how often should I get my oil changed?”, you’re not alone. This is a popular question in our service center, though the answer isn’t as cut and dry as expected. Though most drivers can schedule their oil change every 5,000 to 7,500 miles, it isn’t the case for everyone.

Depending on your specific vehicle, driving habits, and what’s under the hood of your car, you may find yourself getting oil changes more or less often than the general rule of thumb. Here’s why:

• More frequently: Turbocharged engines and engines that use conventional oil work a little harder to power your vehicle. If you live in a dusty area or a big city with high pollution, your oil will get dirty quicker.
• Less frequently: If you have a newer car, you might be able to wait until the 10,000-mile mark. Same goes for diesel engines. Diesel burns oil slower than other engines, resulting in the need for fresh oil less often.

Signs You Need an Oil Change

Don’t know when your last oil change was? If you have gone past your recommended oil change mark, chances are your vehicle will let you know. Watch for these common warnings you need an oil change and if you notice them, get into our service center to prevent issues from forming.

• Dark and dirty oil: Get into the habit of checking your oil once a month. Look for oil that is amber, translucent, and free of debris. If it’s dark, sludgy, or full of particles, your car needs fresh oil and a new filter.
• Odd noises: Hearing a knocking, clunking, or roaring noise coming from your engine? Those strange sounds may be caused by a lack of oil. Engines have to work harder when there’s no oil to help, which can cause some weird noises while driving.
• Dashboard lights: If you see your check-engine or oil dashboard lights illuminating, that’s your car telling you it’s time for a change. Listen and make your oil-change appointment asap.
